The Creative Curriculum LearningGames
This series of 5 books transforms the fundamentals of early childhood development into easy-to-use activities. These books provide parents and caregivers with proven, fun games to play with their young children from birth through 60 months of age. These materials are perfect for use in home visiting programs, in family child care homes, as send-home materials for families, and in parent education classes. • Every game is presented on a full page, front and back, and is illustrated with engaging color photos. Within each game you will find details on how to interact with the baby or child, and how to adapt the game to the child's ability level. Each game sheet also includes information on what the child is experiencing, how she or he may react, and an explanation of why the activity is important for the child's development. A chronological age is not mentioned on the handouts, making this a great resource to use with families of children with special needs. Authors: Joseph Sparling and Isabelle Lewis. Paperback, 2008. • The Home Visitor's Guide is a companion to The Creative Curriculum LearningGames series. It provides home visitors with strategies to help families better understand child development, use observation to learn about their child, and respond to their children's learning during play. It guides the home visitor in selecting LearningGames for individual children and using them with children and families. The Home Visitor's Guide also provides valuable information on conducting home visits, communicating and building effective relationships with families, understanding the influence of culture in their work, and supporting the family-child relationship. Among the resources included are handouts for families that describe child development during the first 5 years of life. Paperback, 80 pages, 2007.

Social Stories by Carol Gray
The concept of Social Stories for children with autism has gained popularity in recent years. Carol Gray initiated and developed the use of Social Stories in 1991. She has 20 years of experience educating students with autistic spectrum disorders. • Social Stories are used primarily to teach children with autism how to respond appropriately to a given situation. These stories are short, positive narratives that describe specific situations such as when to say thank you, how to give a hug, sharing toys, washing hands etc. They are also used to describe classroom routines, or variations in that routine (e.g. fire drill). • Social Stories can be written by therapists, teachers, parents - anyone working or living with a child with an autistic spectrum disorder. These stories often include information that helps autistic children understand other people's feelings and thoughts. They require parents and professionals to consider a situation from the perspective of the child with autism, and to identify and share information that may be missing through use of the story. • "Writing Social Stories" is an actual Carol Gray workshop. In this three-hour presentation she explains the genesis for her concept and leads the audience through exercises during which they can write their own Social Stories. If you plan a group viewing, we recommend ordering additional copies of the workbook so that each participant can have their own copy and have the best learning experience. • "The New Social Story Book" includes 100 actual stories in different areas such as social skills, personal care, cooking and mealtime routines, helping around the house and more. Each story has black and white illustrations so that the child can have a visual representation of the story. Includes a detailed chapter on how to write Social Stories.

DVD/Video: Embracing Play Teaching Your Child with Autism
An excellent video/DVD, practical and full of ideas for parents and professionals on how to keep a child with autism engaged through what comes naturally to most children - play. Embracing Play shows dozens of play sessions between parent or professional and child. The children shown have all been diagnosed with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. They range in age from 2.5 to 4.5 years. • Using a technique called "Object Focused Play", developed by the Behavioral Intervention Association, the video teaches how to use toys to capture a child's attention and initiate learning. This technique uses "entry points", activities that most interest a specific child (e.g. dropping a ball or pouring water), to set the foundation for simple play routines that are gradually expanded into more symbolic play. Play scenes are very easy to follow and replicate. • This video is recommended for parents, caregivers, and anyone working with young autistic children. • Developed by Hilary Baldi and Deanne Detmers, founders and directors of the Behavioral Intervention Association in Emeryville, CA, a non-profit organization that provides early intervention programs to children with autism and their families. 47 minutes, 2000.
