Baby Safe Feeder

No more wrapping food in gauze to practice chewing skills! This innovative product was designed by a father who almost lost his 9 month old son when he choked on a piece of teething biscuit. The Safe Feeder allows you to safely introduce pieces of food to children who are still practicing their chewing skills. Just put food in the feeder bag and screw the ring tight. The mesh bag will allow the child to enjoy chewing fresh food without the risk of choking. The Safe Feeder comes with one bag. Replacement bags are available. Tube Feeding Videos by Marsha Dunn Klein

Three excellent videos/DVDs about the very special issues surrounding tube feedings. The videos were created by Marsha Dunn Klein, OTR/L, a well-known pediatric occupational therapist and feeding specialist who has co-authored many feeding therapy resources such as "Feeding and Nutrition for the Child with Special Needs" and "Pre-Feeding Skills".
All three videos are appropriate for parents, caregivers and therapists. The first video, Tube Feedings are Mealtimes Too, provides clear, supportive information on how to take the "procedure" out of tube feedings and create a "mealtime" that supports a loving, trusting feeding relationship (17 minutes long). The second video, The Journey from Tube Feeding Towards Oral Feeding, provides information and practical strategies on how to help a child along the continuum from tube feeding toward oral feeding (26 minutes long). The third video, Taking Tube Feedings to School, is packed with practical information on the steps involved in sending tube fed children to school (17 minutes long).

Chewy Tubes & The Jaw Rehabilitation Program

Chewy Tubes are an innovative oral-motor device designed to provide a resilient, non-food, chewable surface for practicing biting and chewing skills. They are great for providing sensory input to the mouth in preparation for chewing. Made of FDA approved material, they are latex free, lead free and do not contain any PVC.
Chewy Tubes were originally designed to be used with the Jaw Rehabilitation Program, a patented methodology developed by Mary E. Schiavoni, M.S., CCC-SLP, Feeding Consultant and Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Therapist. The program offers a series of goals and objectives designed to develop jaw movements that are fundamental to the development of biting and chewing skills. The 43-page manual describes in detail how to use the Chewy Tubes. The assessment forms cover structure, range of motion, dentition/alignment, function, quality of motion and food texture.
Chewy Tubes are available in two attractive colors: the yellow tube has a smaller stem size for chewing (3/8"D) while the red tube offers a slightly wider stem size (1/2"D). Both are approx. 3" long. If a child cannot close the jaw in response to tactile stimulation, the larger size tube should be introduced first, with a transition to the narrower tube after more consistent and graded jaw closure is demonstrated. If a child demonstrates difficulty opening the jaw, start with the narrower tube and work your way up to the wider one. Chewy Tubes may be washed with soap and water. They are recommended for children 10 months and up.
