Callirobics: Workbooks & CDs
This wonderful and innovative program was developed for occupational therapists, teachers and parents. Each photocopiable workbook is accompanied by a music CD which provides rhythm and fun while still letting each child practice at his or her own pace. Basic Shapes to Music (first level) practices motions from drawing lines in the right direction to the simplest repeated curves that form the basis of cursive letters. Stickers and cartoons encourage movement to the end of the page. The reassuring and soothing voice of Cathy Bollinger repeats the directions for each exercise in the form of a catchy song, providing an auditory cue. The next two workbooks practice more complex shapes, from the first discontinuous lines in Pre-Writing Skills (second level), to lowercase-size shapes and actual basic cursive letters in Handwriting Exercises (third level). Clever and motivating cartoon analogies are used, e.g. London Bridge for M and W shapes. The music (without words) is themed to the cartoons, and there are more detailed written instructions and examples. There are verbal prompts between exercises.
